Introduction

Icecrown Citadel (or I.C.C./ICC as its short form name) is the penultimate raid of the World of Warcraft - Wrath of the Lich King expansion. In this raid, you face the leader of the Scourge, Arthas Menethil, a fallen Paladin who is now a Death Knight. Also inside is Professor Putricide, the mad scientist who created the Scourge virus and converted the many dead humans, elves, and like to become Forsaken. The Lich King sits at the top of the Citadel, but you won't be able to see him unless you're in the raid instance, so no bomb dropping.

It is the penultimate raid because they released The Ruby Sanctum raid to keep people going before Cataclysm was released later in the year. This raid comes in two parts: ten men and 25 men. As such, there are achievements for both levels and mounts for both sets of achievements. They look similar, and both are frostbrood vanquisher bone dragons like the Sandragosa boss, one of the last bosses in the raid.

The raid is split into upper and lower levels, separated by a requirement to get a "plane" to the upper part. There are portals between each section, so you don't need to go through every part to get to the part you want. There is no exit point when you reach the Lich King. You must either jump off the edge and die or Hearthstone back to your inn to escape. If you have a Mage in the group, they can create a portal for you.

The entrance of the Icecrown Citadel is at the southern central area of the zone, with Wintergrasp. The nearest flight point to the entrance is the Flight point in Wintergrasp.

In the Citadel area of the Icecrown zone, there is an entrance to another part of the building, and there, you will find three dungeons that were released at the same time as the raid opened. One of those dungeons, Halls of Reflection, will see you go up against the Lich King, but you will not be able to kill him; his health will not fall below 1 point, I've tried.

When you get to the Lich King, be sure you have a selfie taken of the boss. He will not attack until you talk to the N.P.C. in the middle of the room.

Running this raid will award Ashen Verdict reputation. You can get a quest for a ring when you first enter the instance. Once you have the ring, you can upgrade it if you have the correct reputation.

Shadowmourne Quests

For plate wearers such as Warriors, there is the Shadowmourne Axe quest line that will eventually reward them with a legendary axe and a mount (Crimson Deathcharger). The quest should still be available if you are still waiting for it. You need to realise that a couple of quests involve having a group of three or four people so that you can drain their life force from them. If you can make it that far, the Invincible's Rein drops on 25 and H.C.. You will need a healer in the party, whether you solo or join a group, for the Rescue Valithria Dreamwalker boss encounter, as the boss needs to be healed.

The quest line starts once you have reached friendly terms with the Ashen Verdict. You will be given a quest by Highlord Darion Mograine, and that quest is The Sacred and the Corrupt, which is set outside of the raid.

Soloing

It can be run solo if your character is 90 or above. If your character is lower, it is still possible with an excellent, geared character. When running solo, you can run around and kill everything without worrying about tactics, get in and nuke the boss.

You can run the raid solo to get XP for your character as you level up post-80, but it's better to quest, as you'll get better gear from quests. Epic Loot from Icecrown does not increase in value as you increase in level.

Soloing the Ice Crown Citadel increases the chances of gaining the mount that drops from the Lich King. Increasing chances means that you won't be sharing rolls with anyone.

Obtainable Mounts

By completing the Glory achievement mentioned below, you will be awarded one of the following mounts, depending on which level you did: ten or 25 men in Classic. When ten men and 25 men were dropped in favour of expandable raids, both mounts were awarded on completing one achievement.

  • Bloodbathed Frostbrood Vanquisher
  • Icebound Frostbrood Vanquisher Mount
  • Crimson Deathcharger
  • Invincible - Rare drop from the Lich King.
